"Relevance in News" was founded in 1994 to advocate less crime reporting by local television news. The focus on police-news has negatively impacted both the quality of news and the viewer's perception of the world. Tabloid-style sensational stories bump more useful news stories diminishing any distinction between news and entertainment. Crime news triggers depression, anxiety, and a sense of hopelessness. More relevant, useful news drives a sense of purpose and connectivity with community.
"Assault of the Evening News" is a documentary-style video project by Buck Challenger Productions. Composed of interviews and news footage, the project examines how crime news affects viewers and how it displaces beneficial news and useful information relevant to the local community. Journalists, television viewers, psychologists and media critics offer their opinions and solutions to an issue few viewers consider challenging.
